Fw: [AfricaWatch] U.S. building up base in Djibouti

WASHINGTON, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- The U.S. military is building up its base in Djibouti, located in the Horn of Africa, and has contracted three U.S. companies for the project.

B.L. Harbert International LLC, headquartered in Alabama, is being awarded a $150.7 million fixed-price contract to build a forward operating site at Camp Lemonnier, the Department of Defense said.
The site, about 20 acres in size, will have 11 buildings, site work and supporting facilities to support current and emerging operational missions. The buildings to be constructed include an aircraft hangar, air operations center, armory, joint operations center/tactical operation center/communication center, logistics warehouse and maintenance facility, sleeping quarters and related facilities.
The contract to B.L. Harbert includes three extension options, which if exercised will bring the contract's cumulative value to more than $156.8 million.
California-based ITSI Gilbane Co. will conduct power plant upgrades at Camp Lemonnier under a fixed-price contract worth more than $16.6 million. Under the award, the company will provide and install eight new power modules to supplement the four existing power modules at the facility, as well as an overflow fuel tank and a fuel line connecting two power plants.
Caddell Construction Co. Inc. of Alabama, under an award worth more than $36.1 million, will design and build combined headquarters building and joint operations center at the Djibouti base, the Department or Defense said.
