New Uganda Political Organization Challenges President's Rule

As Uganda celebrates 51 years of independence Wednesday, a new political organization called theFreedom and Unity Front (FUF) has been created to liberate the country from what the organizers calls the fear, hunger, oppression, corruption, victimization, bribery, and nepotism under President Yoweri Museveni.
Vincent Magombe, publicity secretary for the FUF, said membership in the new organization is open to all Ugandans irrespective of their political, tribal, regional, gender or social class orientation.
"It is an amalgam of several organizations and individuals who have come together with a purpose of trying to cause positive change in Uganda. As you know, Uganda is a country that is ruled by a dictatorship. President Museveni has been in power for 27 years, and he does not want to go away," he said.
The group accuses Museveni of manipulating the country's ethnic and regional differences to divide and rule Ugandans. Magombe said Museveni has stifled any efforts to bring about change in Uganda through democratic means.
"He [President Museveni] has been very repressive. Very many people are in prison. Others have died. So, there is a very repressive situation. And, Ugandans have wanted to change the country through political elections, but the president has made that impossible," Magombe said.
He said the constitution empowers Ugandans to use any means necessary to change their government.
"As far as what guides us is the constitution of Uganda. It clearly states in Article 3 that Ugandans can use any means available to them to try and cause change if it is proven that an individual, a Ugandan or a group of people have not just violated the constitution, but violated it over and over again. And so, this is why Ugandans are now saying any means can be used. Of course, we are not saying that we would like to cause a civil war in the country," Magombe said.
Magombe said FUF is an organization for all Ugandans, contrary to government's belief that the new group is a brain child of renegade army general David Sejusa.
"This organization is basically a platform; it is actually a unifying body which takes on the role of an umbrella organization which is going to link up many different organizations. It could be different types of liberation forces, it could be different types of political parties, it could even be individuals. But, they just have to be driven by one objective and that objective is to overthrow the regime of President Museveni," he said.
He said Ugandans will be shocked when the new group announces its leadership team and organizational structure sometime in November or December.
