South Africa: 'No link between Kagame's comments, assassinated dissident'

Cape Town, South Africa - South Africa's Department of International
Relations on Monday declined to respond to Rwandan President Paul
Kagame, who has inferred that his government may have been behind the
high-profile assassination of dissident Patrick Karegeya.

The former spy chief was strangled at a luxury Johannesburg hotel
earlier this month.

In an address in Kigali on Sunday which was reported in the Rwandan
media, Kagame reportedly said those who undermine his country "usually
face serious consequences, wherever they are".

He reportedly added that his job as President "is to confront and
defend Rwanda against people who want to destroy what we have been
building".

Kagame's comments echo those of Prime Minister Pierre Habumuremyi who
was earlier quoted as saying: 'Betraying citizens and their country
that made you a man shall always bear consequences to you'.

Spokesperson for the Department of International Relations and
Co-operation Clayson Monyela said he was aware of Kagame's remarks but
that these had no bearing on diplomatic ties between South Africa and
Rwanda.

He said Kagame did not name "any individual or country" in his remarks
on Sunday, and it was not Pretoria's duty to decipher what Kagame was
referring to.
