[AfricaRealities] Kizito Mihigo, Rwanda genocide: Singer accused of conspiracy.

A strange story out of Rwanda: A well-known gospel-singer named Kizito Mihigo has confessed to conspiring with exile and rebel groups to overthrow the regime of president Paul Kagame—but many Rwandans wonder if he's been railroaded because he released a song that challenged the government's (self-serving) official account of the country's 1990s genocide.

From Al-Jazeera:

Last month, as the trial of Mihigo and three co-defendants began in Kigali, Mihigo, dressed in a pink prison uniform...pleaded guilty to the long list of charges: forming a criminal gang, aiding the formation of a criminal gang, conspiracy against the established government or president of the republic, complicity in a terrorist act, murder and conspiracy to commit murder. But he and his attorneys also argued that he never intended to carry out the alleged acts — the most serious of which, according to prosecutors, was planning the assassination of Kagame.

Mihigo's co-defendants have pleaded not guilty, and one says he was coerced into confession; the judicial system in Rwanda is known to be subject to political influence, and Al-Jazeera's story suggests that the singer might simply have decided to cut his losses rather than fight an uphill battle to prove his innocence. In the background of the entire affair is a song he released in March called "Igisobanuro Cy'urupfu"("The Meaning of Death"):

The melancholy ballad, which tells of "lives brutally taken but not qualified as genocide," is an unmistakable challenge to the image of Kagame's RPF as saviors who pacified the country. Despite putting a stop to the genocide — the 100-day mass murder of up to a million Tutsi and moderate Hutu orchestrated by extremists in the former government — Kagame's troops have been implicated by multiple U.N. investigations in the killing of tens of thousands of civilians during the genocide period in Rwanda and in subsequent invasions of neighboring Congo. As the Rwanda scholar Gérard Prunier has written, the violence inflicted by the RPF in the genocide's aftermath, largely though not exclusively against Hutu, was not merely a case of "uncontrolled revenge killings," as RPF defenders often argue, "but rather a policy of political control through terror."

Kagame has held office since 2000, winning over 90 percent of the popular vote in 2003 and 2010 elections that, not surprisingly, were criticized as undemocratic and fraudulent by outside observers.

[AfricaRealities] Rwanda: Col Emmanuel Ndahiro linked to collaboration with detainees

RDF: Col Emmanuel Ndahiro linked to collaboration with detainees

Col Emmanuel Ndahiro

Inyenyeri News has obtained reliable information that Col. Ndahiro was summoned by RPF to explain links with the Rwanda opposition. As the RPF power struggle continues it does not surprise any sober mind that Col. Emmanuel Ndahiro a former Presidential aide has been summoned by RPF to explain his relationship with what Kigali government perceives as "enemies of the state". Although this development will not surprise many Rwandans but it will certainly shock the entire inner circle of President Kagame. There other reports from RDF which say that the Colonel's home was searched early this week and a number of other senior military officers including some from the Republican Guard that are thought to have worked closely with Col. Tom Byabagamba. They were summoned shortly after Ndahiro left the RPF secretariat offices,.Ndahiro is accused of sympathising and having links with opposition figures.

Left to right  Col Tom byabagamba, Breg Gen Rusagara and Mary Baine

On the orders of President Kagame, Col. Ndahiro was quizzed by senior
RPF officials including the secretary General Francois Ngarambe and
among the allegations was to explain his links and relationship with
Brig. Gen. Frank Rusagara and Col. Tom Byabagamba. We have also learnt
that some intelligence personnel passed on information to Kagame of
how Col. Ndahiro condemned the arrest and detention of his RDF
comrades. The colonel isn't only unhappy with the trend of events in
the country but also questioned about an ongoing death and
disappearances of innocent citizens. Ndahiro is coming to terms and
recognising the dark side of the government he has served for so long
and we understand his in regret just like many who have served and
realised it wasn't for the good cause of the nation.

He is alleged to have made statements that support Gen. Kayumba
Nyamwasa's description of Kagame's rule. Our source in Kigali says
Col. Ndahiro will find it hard to enjoy the status he has held for a
long time. "The weight of the allegations which are statements about
(Munyangire and intrigues) he made to describe Kagame's ruling style
carries a heavy price including death and all the suffering".
Inyenyeri has further learnt that while at the RPF offices, he was challenged by both Musoni James and Gen. Jack Nziza to explain why in the first place he failed to
coordinate the National Security Service (NSS) and bring to account
the state enemies. He was tasked to give a full account of what made
him fail in bringing down both Gen. Kayumba and Col. Patrick Karegeya
while still in office that coordinates the killings.
.

We managed to speak to one General in Kigali who requested to remain anonymous because of his security who wasn't surprised of
Col. Ndahiro's statement. "I am not surprised if he made such a
statement and it's no different to what other members of the force
feel". What surprises me is how could a man who has been at the helm
of this murderous regime forget the impact of such statement. He
wondered.

Col.Ndahiro once described as Rwanda's Vice President currently
serves in a little known job of being in charge of history and
research (archives) in the Ministry of Defense. He served as head of
National Security Service (NSS) and was sacked for failing to
coordinate the killing of late Col. Patrick Karegeya and the man his in
agreement with General Kayumba Nyamwasa. A medical doctor by
professional Ndahiro abandoned his career for military and politics
but the jury is out to determine his fate and going by Kagame's
history and treatment to those who have not stood by him to support
his political ideology and engage in ongoing killings have all paid a
heavy price which Ndahiro won't be exception.

Ndahiro occupied top posts and was a key right hand man of President
Kagame including personal physician, military advisor, RDF spokesman
and served as Kagame's personal secretary. He was relegated to a
little known job of being in charge of history and research in the
Ministry of Defense. According to his close friends, Ndahiro shared
with them that President Kagame did not have the courtesy to inform
him about his decision to drop him from the NSS juicy job. A family
member told Inyenyeri News that Ndahiro collapsed in the office and
was taken to hospital when he learnt from Rwanda Television and radio
Rwanda that he had been dropped from the NSS position. Since then, he
has never recovered from the shock and he is still nursing his wounds and the
traumatic experience.
