More deaths reported during fighting between DR Congo army, militia group

KINSHASA, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Two civilians were killed and several
fighters of Mayi-Mayi militia died during fighting between DR Congo
Armed Forces (FARDC) and Mayi-Mayi Yakutumba militia in South Kivu
province, east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), a local
source said on Thursday.

"The two civilians were killed by Yakutumba militia," the local source
who did not wish to be named, told Xinhua on phone.

He said the national army had on Tuesday launched an offensive against
rebel positions, killing several fighters of Yakutumba militia allied
to the People's National Coalition for the Sovereignty of Congo led by
William Amuri alias Yakutumba.

Authorities in the 10th military region said an assailant was killed
and three people including two children were injured.

"There were no deaths nor injuries in our ranks," said colonel Anaphos
Baburwa, the military commander for the 10th military region.

He said the militia had fled into the neighbouring Ngandja forest.

"They were pushed at least 20 km south of Baraka locality with several
people whom they are using as human shield," he said.
