Woman dies in Montreal's Metro after scarf caught in escalator

CBC - 8 hrs ago

A woman died Thursday morning after her scarf got caught in the
escalator at the Fabre Metro station in Montreal.

The incident happened around 9:15 a.m. ET at an unsupervised,
automatic entrance to the Metro station on the blue line.

"She got strangled… and the woman, aged around 30, passed away on
scene," said Const. Jean-Pierre Brabant of the Montreal police.

A witness told investigators that the woman's hair also got caught in
the escalator after she bent down in an attempt to dislodge her scarf.

The woman was in cardiac arrest when firefighters and paramedics
arrived on the scene.

UrgencesSanté said the woman appeared to be in her 30s, but could have
also been in her 40s.

The Fabre Metro station is in the Montreal borough of
Villeray-St-Michel-Parc-Extension.

This is so tragic. My condolences to the family. I wonder if anyone
realized that there is an emergency stop button at the bottom of
escalators? But would anyone have time to react? Never let anything
dangle on an escalator, including shoe laces.

I thought there is a kill switch at one end of the escalator?

If there were witnesses, or a witness, at the scene, why didn't anyone
press the Emergency Stop Button on the escalator, to instantly stop
it. So sad she had to lose her life.

How horrible! I wonder if this was a case of nobody being around to
witness the incident, or nobody bothering to try to help? I recently
fell and broke my nose in the train station parking lot, and I can say
it is disappointing to be laying on the ground in a pool of your own
blood, with people all around you, none of whom can be bothered to try
to help.

Such a freeky, sad end to a good life. I've always had this weird
feelings about scarfs, especially when I see some flying loose.
Condolences to the family.

Oddly there was a scene on Chicago PD about this last week.

My mom always warned me about how dangerous an escalator could be. I
always thought it was just an urban legend.

Next time you use an escalator look for the emergency stop button.
Every escalator should have one at both the bottom and the top.

Many years ago a celebrity was killed (can't remember her name) was
killed when driving a convertible with her long flowing scarf flying
outside the car. It became entangled in something and she died.

Doesn't take long for a person to be strangled if the scarf and hair
were knotted tight ... 30 seconds and choked out... sad accident.

Pourquoi les sanctions américaines contre le Rwanda sont-elles si importantes ?

Pourquoi les sanctions américaines contre le Rwanda sont-elles si importantes ? Auteur : The African Rights Campaign.

Why US Sanctions Against Rwanda Are So Important

Why US Sanctions Against Rwanda Are So Important Author: The African Rights Campaign. London, UK Published: March 2026   Introduction When a government is accused of extrajudicial killings, mass displacement, sexual violence, human rights abuses, and the systematic pillage of another country's mineral resources, the expected response in international diplomacy is an unequivocal denial backed by evidence. Rwanda did not do that. When the United States Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions on the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) and four of its most senior commanders on 2 March 2026, Kigali's official spokesperson Yolande Makolo made a statement that diplomatic analysts will study carefully for what it conspicuously omitted. She said the sanctions were 'unjust,' that they targeted 'only one party to the peace process,' and that they 'misrepresent the reality and distort the facts.' Rwanda's government, described by Bloomb...

Rubaya Mine Under USA’s Control: Kagame Has No Grounds to Object.

Rubaya Mine: Strategic Interests, Regional Conflict and the DRC–USA Cooperation Framework Rubaya mine, located in Masisi territory in North Kivu, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, is a Congolese resource. It was a Congolese resource before the M23 advanced on it, it remains a Congolese resource today, and it will remain a Congolese resource regardless of what any regional actor claims, implies or pursues. That is not a political position. It is a statement of international law and sovereign right. This foundational point must be stated plainly because it is frequently obscured in discussions about the conflict in eastern Congo. Debates about security narratives, mineral partnerships and geopolitical alignment risk creating a false impression that Rubaya's ownership or governance is somehow open to negotiation between external parties. It is not. The Democratic Republic of the Congo holds sovereign authority over its territory and its natural resources. N...
