Le Premier ministre conservateur britannique David Cameron était vertement critiqué jeudi pour avoir évoqué dans une interview une "nuée" de migrants qui traversent la Méditerranée et veulent venir au Royaume-Uni.
Interviewé par la chaîne ITV au Vietnam, où il est en visite officielle, David Cameron a déclaré que la situation à Calais était "très difficile parce qu'une nuée de migrants traverse la Méditerranée à la recherche d'une existence meilleure, et cherche à venir au Royaume-Uni parce qu'il y a du travail, que son économie est en pleine croissance et que c'est un endroit incroyable pour vivre".
"Il devrait se rappeler qu'il parle d'êtres humains et non d'insectes", a aussitôt réagi Harriet Harman, leader par intérim du Parti travailliste. Candidat à la tête du Labour, Andy Burnham a lui dénoncé un langage "scandaleux".
Même Nigel Farage, le leader du parti anti-immigration Ukip, a assuré qu'il n'utiliserait "pas un tel langage", accusant M. Cameron de vouloir "jouer au dur".
L'association Refugee Council a fustigé un "langage affreux et déshumanisant venant de la part d'un des leaders de ce monde".
"Ce genre de rhétorique ne fait que jeter de l'huile sur le feu, à un moment où le gouvernement devrait travailler dans le calme avec ses partenaires européens pour trouver une solution à cette grave crise humanitaire", a insisté l'association.
Peter Sutherland, représentant spécial du Secrétaire général de l'ONU pour les migrations, a de son côté regretté, sur la BBC, l'existence au Royaume-Uni d'un "débat excessif sur la question de Calais".
"Nous parlons d'un nombre de personnes relativement faible comparé à celui auquel doivent faire face d'autres pays", a-t-il dit, rappelant que l'Allemagne avait "reçu l'an dernier 175.000 demandes d'asile et la Grande-Bretagne 24.000".
"Entre 5.000 et 10.000 personnes vivent dans des conditions terribles à Calais. Au lieu de penser à envoyer des soldats ou de construire des clôtures, nous devrions d'abord nous occuper de cette crise humanitaire", a-t-il ajouté.
