[AFRICAFORUM] Bourse d'Etudes (New 2): PhD Candidate for Mathematical Statistics

Radboud University Nijmegen is a comprehensive university with a broad focus. It has a modern, green campus that boasts various state-of-the-art facilities. Radboud University emphasizes personal attention, intensive education and a strong sense of community. All in all, this results in high-quality education and research and interdisciplinary cooperation, which make Radboud University a successful university of international standing.

PhD Candidate for Mathematical Statistics (1,0 fte)

Faculty of Science
Maximum salary: € 2,664 gross/month
Vacancy number: 62.26.14
Application deadline: 16 June 2014
Responsibilities
As a PhD candidate you will conduct research in the field of mathematical statistics and will have a light teaching load of about one exercise class per semester. Your research will focus on least squares estimators in non-parametric shape constraint settings. There have been some major developments in this field over the past few years. We will try to generalize these results to several natural shape constraint models such as convex regression functions, also in higher dimensions. These are challenging problems, with important applications in many areas of statistics. Finally, you will occasionally assist in solving applied statistical problems encountered by scientists from other fields, thereby enlarging your statistical experience.
Work environment
You will work at the Institute for Mathematics, Astrophysics and Particle Physics (IMAPP). IMAPP has a large group of PhD candidates and a strong support system, including educational programmes for further development. You will be a member of the Applied Stochastics group, which is headed by Prof. Eric Cator. This group currently consists of two professors, one assistant professor, one post-doc and one PhD candidate. We have a strong track record in probability and mathematical statistics, and much experience in applied statistics, also through our Statistical Helpdesk.
What we expect from you
- you hold a Master's degree in mathematics with a strong focus on statistics and/or probability;
- you are eager to learn more about asymptotic statistics in shape constraint settings, and you are not afraid to follow your intuition as a mathematician;
- you are also able to communicate your ideas to fellow statisticians at international conferences, and explain statistical concepts and methods to non-statisticians, relevant to the specific problems they encounter.
What we have to offer
We offer you:
- employment: 1,0 fte;
- a maximum gross monthly salary of € 2,664 based on a 38-hour working week;
- in addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus;
- the gross starting salary amounts to €2,083 per month, and will increase to €2,664 in the fourth year;
- you will be appointed for a period of four years. Your performance will be evaluated after 18 months. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2.5 years;
- you will be classified as a PhD Candidate (promovendus) in the Dutch university job-ranking system (UFO).
