Rwandan rebels want SADC mediation with Kigali

Rebels of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR)
have called on the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to
negotiate with the Rwandan government, a precondition for their
repatriation, a UN source in Kinshasa told APA on Tuesday.According to
the same source, the FDLR movement made the announcement to SADC's
representatives who are on a fact-finding mission to the town of
Kanyabayonga in North Kivu Province (Eastern DRC), where Rwandan
rebels who surrendered to the international community are currently
being held.
In late May, about a hundred Rwandan FDLR fighters had submitted
themselves up for disarmament.
SADC's delegates have promised to submit the rebels' request to its
secretariat for consideration.
Kigali has so far rejected all offers of negotiation made by the FDLR.
Some 2,000 fighters of the rebel group are still active in both north
and south Kivu provinces.
