UN, France urge DRC, Rwanda to stop hostilities

The United Nations and France have urged Democratic Republic of Congo
(DRC) and Rwanda to immediately stop clashes at their common border.
Heavy fighting was reported early on Thursday and lasted for half an
hour following Wednesday's clashes.
In statement to the African Press Agency, the Head of the United
Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic Congo (MONUSCO) Martin
Kobler expressed concern over the clashes involving Congolese
government troops and Rwandan forces.
He appealed to both sides to diffuse the tension and avoid further bloodshed.
I am calling both parties to take measure for the quick restoration of
security and peace in the area while urging them to resort to peaceful
approach in resolving their difference, he added.
In a statement issued by its Foreign Affairs ministry, France said it
was worried by the security situation in Democratic Republic of Congo
with the ongoing fighting which broke out on 11 June in North-Kivu.
France said it is crucial for both parties to intensify efforts
towards defusing the tension and find a peaceful way out of the
crisis.
The European nation also reiterated its attachment to the complete
implementation of the framework accord for peace, security and
cooperation in the Great Lakes Region which was signed in February
2013 in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.
