Four-year-old boy asks NASA for help with his homework, gets awesome
10-minute video response

Good News - 4 hrs ago

Lucas Whitely, a four-year-old student at Sunny Hill Primary in West
Yorkshire, England, was assigned a simple project about space.

He decided to recruit some help: NASA.

With the assistance of his father, he sent NASA a video of himself
asking three questions about space:

1. How many stars are there?
2. Who came in second and third in the race to the moon?
3. Did any animals go to the moon?

Instead of just receiving a formal letter, brochure, or emailed
response, an engineer took the time Woman gives birth on NYC sidewalk,
names daughter after good Samaritan who gave her a coat ]

Ted Garbeff of NASA's Ames Research Center gave Lucas and his class a
virtual tour of the Mountain View, California, base before answering
Lucas' questions and encouraging the young students watching to work
hard in school and to get along with one another.

"It's really a lot of fun being an engineer – you get to play with
great toys all day and most importantly you get to learn about the
world. It wasn't easy, though, getting here, I had to work really
hard. So remember to work hard in school and listen to your teacher."

"Hopefully one of these days I'll see you all – maybe up in space,"
Garbeff told the Daily Mail. "Ted is a fantastic bloke to go out of
his way for someone he doesn't know on the other side of the world."

Teachers were so impressed with the video response that they organized
a school assembly to show it to everyone.

They are very nice at NASA. One time I was at my part time job and I
was cashing out a customer and I noticed his MIT ring and I had
commented on it. He was surprised that I recognized and we started
chatting turns out he used to work for NASA back in the 70's 80's but
no longer working their because he said it was very heart breaking for
him when the Space Challenger disaster happened he said he was one of
the scientists in the control room.

Gotta love that the scientists and engineers at NASA are so committed
to educating young people and are always excited to talk about the
wonders of space. Not the first time they've done something like this,
and I doubt it's the last. Keeps up the good work ladies and gents!

This is why I always loved and I'll always love NASA. I also think
NASA is one of the greatest organizations built by humans, primarily
because of its culture. This culture permeates everything they do,
even a response video to a 4 y. o. child. It's a culture or permanent
expanding our frontiers of knowledge and a culture of promoting
economic and social growth through science. It's humanism at its best.

I wouldn't be surprised if the young boy grows up to be a scientist
and/or astronaut. Most of the time, all it takes is that one single
event in a child's life to impress and influence them.

Ted, that was wonderful, I'm sure the school will be using that tape
for a long time. Children are our future thank you for your time for a
child. God bless you
