`Think Security Africa` says coups, revolts, civil wars on the rise

African societies have been urged to set up peace and security
initiatives to combat rising civil conflicts, and deliberately
unconstitutional transfers of power that doubled from 2011 to 2013.
'Think Security Africa' (TSA), a security study group, issued a
report, Security in Africa 2013, based on assessments of
security-related issues in that period, where incidents of national
and sub-national conflict, border insecurity, secession, coup d'états,
political instability, low-intensity conflict, terrorism, maritime
insecurity and protests and strikes across Africa have been souring
African states.
"In order to improve security in Africa, we need to understand better
often confusing and highly emotive issues that are more tangible.
There are common issues driving the most serious conflicts in Africa
such as policy weaknesses," the report indicated.
The report said that serious violence rises mostly when states are
experiencing challenges with the national chain of command, chiefly in
the military and security organs top levels, along with societal
management, and preserving territorial integrity all at the same time.
The report identifies a link between the rising trend of plots and
actual coups d'état and civil wars, exploring border insecurity and
conflicts of varying intensities cutting across countries.
